Now, the title of this blog may not sound like it has anything to do with websites or ecommerce, but here are some lessons to be learned from the recent slime trend.

But First, Slime
If you don’t have kids (or are older than 18) then it’s likely that the slime-making trend has slipped by you unnoticed. Not to fear: we’re here to get you up to speed. If you want the recipe for the fluffy slime we created in the video, here it is:
- 4 cups of shaving cream
- ½ cup of glue
- 1 tablespoon of baking soda
- 1 tablespoon of saline solution
- Food coloring of your choice
Mix the shaving cream and glue together in a large bowl. Then add the baking soda, saline solution and food color and mix thoroughly. If it’s too loose or sticky, adjust your baking soda and saline solution proportions until you get a consistency you’re satisfied with.
Sure, slime is fun. But what does it have to do with ecommerce? It’s a trend you can capitalize on to make more sales.
Spotting the Trend
There are websites out there like Trend Hunter and Google Trends that are really helpful for finding and researching trends, but nothing beats bowsing social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Youtube manually to find out what people are talking about. If you frequently go to the “trending” page on YouTube, I’m sure you would have seen at least one video about how to make slime at home in the last year.
Creating the Business
By now the excitement of the DIY slime has died down, but if you were on top of the trend at the peak of popularity there could have been a good business opportunity for a savvy entrepreneur. This is why it’s important to keep an eye on social channels!
For example, you could make a “slime kit” that comes with all the necessary ingredients to make your own slime at home. Sure people can just go to the store and buy the ingredients themselves, but many people aren’t sure exactly what brands will and will not work, or they just don’t have the time or capability to go and get the items needed. I’m sure there were at least a few entrepreneurial-minded kids out there that had the idea to sell slime or slime kits when they learned about the trend firsthand.
If you’re interested in starting a business or side hustle of your own, first think about what you are passionate about and what you wouldn’t mind spending your time on.
Slime may not be your thing, but I’m sure you’re passionate about something. The moral of the story is there are business possibilities in everything. (Even something as unlikely as DIY slime.)
