The Boeing 737-800 that was capable of carrying up to 72 passengers had departed from Auckland around 1.10 p.m. today and was scheduled to make a landing in Sydney around 4.50 p.m. New Zealand time.
Instead it travelled less than 100 km before the smoke had been identified. A spokesperson of Qantas Airlines mentioned that airplane was able to make a perfectly safe landing and without any incident.
Thereafter emergency vehicles escorted the aircraft to the terminal.
Engineers have inspected the airplane and identified a fault with one of the ovens inside the forward galley, as per the spokesperson. He said that they aim to have their passengers on their way to Sydney as early as possible.
The airplane had only taken off before the smoke was identified and then an emergency landing took place.
Currently emergency fire trucks are attending the scene.
A spokeswoman of St. John mentioned that ambulances were present on site but as far as she was aware, patients required medical attention.
